Abstract: The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of what is meant by self-determination and what research has suggested about its application to young children with disabilities; to examine what research has suggested about the ways in which families can support the development of self-determined behavior; and to consider the potential implications of an increased focus on family issues on self-determination research and practice in early childhood.
